TRAINING & CONSULTATION

Training
The Rockwood Psychological Services training has been delivered in more than 20 countries worldwide. Therapists are trained in a cutting-edge treatment approach that has been demonstrated to be effective. We offer comprehensive and flexible training packages that focus on developing effective therapeutic skills and knowledge of appropriate treatment targets so that therapists can create an appropriate treatment alliance with their offending clients and target issues related to reoffending. The Training Program is based on our research into effective therapeutic process and on our experience over many years in treating sexual offenders both in prisons and in community settings which is reflected in our most recent treatment book, Rehabilitating Sexual Offenders: A Strength Based Approach (2011), commissioned by the American Psychological Association. It can be readily adapted to inpatient or outpatient settings, and is suitable for either an open or “rolling” format (as described in our Treatment Manual) or a closed or “fixed” format. Training is available primarily for therapists working with sexual offenders however the program and has been delivered and is easily adapted for other types of offender treatment, such as anger management, domestic violence, cognitive skills, substance abuse, and problem gambling.

Training is offered in a variety of forms, from one- or two-day workshops, recommended for sites interested in providing professional development for therapists and staff who are already working with sexual offenders, to a more extensive five-day Training Program, for new or potential therapists, and therapists seeking a more comprehensive professional development. Certificates are provided to trainees indicating they have successfully completed the training. Enrolment for the five-day program should be limited as small group work is essential to this training. Fees are calculated according to the number of trainers required.

Rockwood Psychological Services has provided consultation to a variety of organizations in a number of countries on management, assessment, treatment design and evaluations of offenders or offender programs. These organizations include correctional institutions, community-based psychiatric services, USA-based sexually violent predator programs, and institutions for mentally-disordered offenders. While most of these consultations have focused on sexual offenders we can also provide advice and evaluations of violence programs, and programs for substance abuse and problem gambling.
